Lesson 7 - Overcalls

In our next lesson the opponents enter the auction as we learn how to make overcalls and compete for the contract. How should you respond when your partner overcalls? How far do you compete? We also look at scoring for a better understanding of how far to compete in auctions. All welcome. Priority at the practice playing tables to 2021 students.

Towai Cup

The annual Towai Cup match between our club and Kerikeri will occur on Jun 12th at the Whangarei Cruising Club. Team members are reminded to bring their lunch and a plate. The teams are as shown below:

Welcome Class of 2021!

Thank you to all our members who helped in promoting the club lessons.  We have a bumper crop of keen beginners this year.  Six tables (24 students) arrived Monday night, as well as two returnee tables.  Another five tables (20 students) came along Tuesday morning.  Here are some happy scenes from the first night.  Click on "read more" to see all the photos.

Bridge Banter

New Bridge Banter sessions begin Thursdays after play.  Relax over a glass of wine and review the boards you have just played.  Work out where it all went wrong and how you could approach it differently next time.  What was your line of thinking?  Hear how others viewed the same boards.

We are fortunate to have one of our grandmasters, John McIntosh, offering his time to support these sessions and he is even bringing a bottle of wine to share this Thursday to encourage us along.  See you there!

Finance your trip to National Congress in 2021!

Enter the National Rubber Bridge Competition by Wednesday 31 March.  Entries to Grant Jarvis email: gjarvis@xtra.co.nz.  Rubber bridge is a fun, social version of the game where everyone is in with a chance of winning.  The first rounds are always with local pairs and in later rounds you can "meet in the middle" at a halfway bridge club, cafe, pub ... wherever you can enjoy the fun of a friendly game. If you win the Auckland/Northland competition - you are given a subsidy towards accommodation and travel for taking part in the final at Mount Maunganui in September.
